Aachen

View at the cathedral, Aachen, Germany

Aachen, a city full of history and culture. The highlight of early medieval architecture is the impressive Aachen Cathedral, built for Charlemagne, who was buried in the church in 814. Aachen was a Free Imperial City and the city of royal coronations for nearly six hundred years. King Henry VIII was a candidate for the German crown in 1519. The story is almost too good to be true! Even the famous  Erasmus of Rotterdam visited the city, but the church dinner didn't serve him well. Although the city suffered heavily during World War II, much has been rebuilt in historic style and there is still a lot to see and experience in the beautiful Altstadt. With Dom and Rathaus, the museums and the enticing little alleys and squares.

Liege

Notre Dame church at the Rue Hors-Chateau in Liege, Belgium

Liège, la Cité Ardante in French, is a city known for its rebellious character. The city boasts over 140 different nationalities. Plagued by plundering and uprisings over the centuries. But also the city of the powerful prince bishops, who combined pastoral care with raw power politics. The city was said to be the armory of Europe, of which the Grand Curtius Palace is further proof. Marvel at the Montagne de Bueren, the many churches and the Opéra. Liège, 'a little French corner lost in Belgium'. It has the best flea market in Europe, in the Outremeuse district. Eat the best fries and waffles over here...! On weekends you may want to visit one of the few remaining cafés chantants, 'Aux Olivettes'

World War II memorials

American cemetery at Margraten, Netherlands

Early in September 1944, the Allied troops advanced into this area. Many traces of these battles can still be found in the hinterland of Liège, Maastricht and Aachen and in the neighboring Ardennes and Eifel countryside. Private museums, war cemeteries and memorials and even military leftovers are abundant in the area. Aachen, Malmédy, Sankt Vith, Margraten, the Siegfried Line and the Hurtgenwald are all ominous names of places that still convey vivid picture of these decisive last days of the war.  Learn more about the Battle of the Bulge, the siege of Aachen and the final push to the Rhine river. This tour can be tailor-made to your wishes.
